Donaldson Leads WVU Ground Attack As It Powers Its Way To 305 Yards
Morgantown, WV
Leddie Brown rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Garrett Greene added 76 yards on the ground as West Virginia ran for a season-high 305 yards in a 33-16 win over Liberty Saturday at Mountaineer Field.
The Mountaineers (3-4) snapped a two-game losing streak and earned their first win in Morgantown this season.
Donaldson Powers The Ground Game
Redshirt freshman running back CJ Donaldson got the start for West Virginia and made the most of his opportunity, rushing for a career-high 121 yards on 18 carries, including a 36-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
“CJ ran hard today,” West Virginia coach Neal Brown said. “He’s a physical runner, and he’s got good vision. He’s going to be a good player for us.”
Greene Adds To The Ground Attack
Greene, who started the game at quarterback, also contributed to the Mountaineers’ rushing attack, carrying the ball 14 times for 76 yards.
“Garrett is a dynamic player,” Brown said. “He can make plays with his arm and his legs. He’s a threat to score every time he touches the ball.”
WVU’s Defense Holds Strong
The Mountaineers’ defense also played well, holding Liberty (5-2) to 327 yards of total offense and forcing three turnovers.
“Our defense played their hearts out today,” Brown said. “They got us the ball back several times, and they made some big stops when we needed them.”
Looking Ahead
West Virginia will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State Cyclones.
